Wall Types
Retaining Wall Options
Brisbane's clay soil and slopes need walls built to handle real pressure — especially after the wet season. We spec every wall for the site conditions.
Timber Sleeper
Hardwood sleepers — the most common wall type in SEQ. Suits most residential blocks. We use quality treated hardwood, concreted posts, compacted gravel backfill and ag pipe drainage.
Concrete Sleeper
Concrete sleepers for walls needing higher load capacity or longer lifespan. Better suited to taller walls or sites with heavy soil pressure. Cleaner look than timber.
Block Wall Feature
Block walls for feature gardens and sloped sites. Visually striking and long-lasting. Often combined with render or texture paint to add some texture
Wall + Fence combo
Most sloped Brisbane blocks need the wall done before the fence can go in. We do both in the one job- wall, then the fence on top. One crew, one quote
Step Access
Integrated step access built into retaining wall jobs.
timber, concrete and rock steps to match the wall.
Drainage Systems
Proper Drainage is what makes a retaining wall last, We always install compacted gravel backfill and ag pipe drainage. not an optional extra - it’s standard on every wall —.
FAQs
Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?
1
Generally no permit is needed for walls under 1m on flat ground that aren't near a boundary or easement. Walls over 1m, close to a boundary, or supporting a structure usually need assessment. Rules vary by council — Brisbane, Logan, Redlands and Moreton Bay each have slightly different requirements. We'll flag anything during the site visit.
Timber or concrete sleepers — which should I choose?
2
Timber is the most common and cost-effective choice for most Brisbane residential walls. Concrete is better for taller walls (over 1.2m), sites with significant soil pressure, or where a longer lifespan is the priority. We'll recommend the right product for your site during the quote.
How long does a retaining wall last?
3
A well-built hardwood sleeper wall with proper drainage should last 15–25 years in SEQ's climate. Concrete sleepers last 30+ years. Rock walls are essentially permanent. The biggest factor in lifespan is drainage — a wall without proper ag pipe drainage will fail significantly earlier.
How long does the job take?
4
A standard 8–10m residential wall typically takes 1–2 days. Larger jobs, difficult access, or combination wall-and-fence jobs take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeframe when we quote.
